Certainly not lack of education. Even UK Doctors joined ISIS. It's well known that cults of all stripes (if we can think of Islam as cult-like) often attract intelligent people. And having been indoctrinated, are notoriously difficult to de-programme.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/02/young-uk-doctors-urged-not-to-join-isis …

The misguided belief that intelligence can combat brainwashing is what makes brainwashed intelligent people even more dangerous than the rest. Doubt, skepticism, humility and individualism are what combats brainwashing. Intelligence is neutral at best.

Not to mention, there have been several studies on data released about ISIS showing they are typically highly educated, have jobs and come from richer countries not poorer. Most are considered middle class. Hatred for the West and Judaeo-Christian values drives them.

There might be an element of truth to both sides of the argument. The poor and/or desperate do tend to resort to violence to address their grievances. Where Islam isn't a major factor, the violence tends to be political in nature; where it is, it tends to be religious violence.

You could in fact hypothesise that it is in the interest of dictators to encourage religious extremism to make themselves less of a target.
