Just listened and Im stunned all over again at how much my experience growing up Muslim is so similar to @meganphelps growing up in WBC. One glaring difference, of course, is the size of our ex-groups. Less than 100 ppl compared to over a billion

And then there was Megan’s encounter with her mother (after she left) who stared at her as if she was seeing a ghost while Megan said a few pre-prepared loving words & her aunts screamed abuse. How heartbreaking that these ppl who love each other are kept apart by poisonous dogma

My husband arrived home to find me blubbing in the kitchen! But it was at the same time very uplifting and hopeful. I loved what she said about not assuming evil intent. Most ppl are trying to do good, even if their ideas are bonkers.

That moment! I just texted Megan about that! It was so moving. So heartbreaking. I think he was essentially falling on his sword with that proclamation. I think he regretted what he’d done and that it all got so out of hand...that was my interpretation anyway.
