I think they are afraid but are in denial. They want to keep pretending that everything will be alright if we just hold hands. They are used to parents fixing things behind the scenes and redirect blame to them for failing this time.
Ignorance would actually be a relatively comforting explanation of this behavior (ie questions like that). I don’t think that’s accurate, but it’s definitely not the worst scenario.
