The term "ex-muslim" is necessary in order to reveal the context. "Atheist" is a broader term that doesn't indicate where the individual is coming from. If these people think you adopt "ex-muslim" and open yourself up to fatwah's and abuse for publicity...

Also, she's wrong. Being an atheist without having previously adhered to a belief system is not quite the same as being an ex-something. I see people claiming to be "ex-Christian" all the time. I'm not an atheist (I'm a Christian), but even I see the difference.
