White people cannot reasonably be expected to take responsibility for white supremacists. Muslims cannot reasonably be expected to take responsibility for Islamists. Trans people cannot reasonably be expected to take responsibility for Jessica Yaniv.

Im consistent in that I disagree w all the above. It is our responsibility to criticize and try to correct the wrongs in our communities...otherwise, what’s the alternative? We all turn a blind eye and say ‘not my problem’? In Canada today there’s very loud condemnation 1

Of a man who verbally attacked two women and a child because apparently he didn’t like that they were speaking Arabic. All Canadians feel responsible that we have to nip that in the bud and not let it go undeterred. As an ExMuslim, I feel a responsibility towards my community 2

so I speak out against execution of apostates, homophobia, gender inequality etc in Muslim communities. And I’m eternally grateful for Muslim ppl doing the work of changing hearts and minds from the inside. It is our responsibility to clean up our communities. 3

White ppl cant refrain from fighting white supremacism because they say ‘it’s not my community’—because obviously ppl in the white supremacist community have no desire to fight it. I don’t think anyone should stay quiet when they see injustice anywhere, but esp w/in their comm.

Of course not. The options aren't being held responsible for white supremacists because you have the same skin colour and failing to object to white supremacism. Consistent liberalism is an option. It requires objecting to bigotry AND collective blame.

Collective blame is a different issue...and yes, I think that’s definitely wrong. Like, white ppl today should not be blamed for slavery, of course, but all Americans have a responsibility to fix racial inequities that exist today because of slavery.

It's the issue I'm taking about. See tweet & follow ons. Consistent liberalism means I can support you in addressing Islamist human rights abuses *because they are illiberal* without holding you responsible for them because you come from a Muslim background.

I think the difference is others holding you responsible because you look like X-vs you taking responsibility because you identify w that community. I cant hold you responsible for actions of white ppl, but you should (and do)choose to take responsibility for illiberal liberals

because you identify w that community and you feel a responsibility to it.
