Your routine reminder that "taqiyya" as a concept is popularized by the Right and is relatively unknown among Muslims.https://twitter.com/SaltyandLit/status/1154025709297373184 …

It’s definitely known among Muslims, but not the way ppl are using it. It’s a permissible lie in order to save your life or stealthily perform jihad. It’s why the 9/11 hijackers drank and went to strip clubs-to fit in/avoid suspicion. Shias use it to avoid being killed by Sunnis.

This is pretty much how I (very much non-Muslim) learned the concept when studying Islam in college. Primarily a Shia concept, isn’t it?

You learned it as a way to "stealthily perform jihad"?

I don’t know that it was connected to jihad particularly. The example given was, I believe, “under what circumstances is it ethically permissible to lie” in the context of Shia living in a Sunni society. (Was 20 yrs ago and I could easily be wrong)

I also believe it was mentioned in the specific context of battlefield deception — as ‘ruse de guerre’ — in the context of Muhammad’s physical battles.

But it’s certainly not a made-up modern right wing concept, even if people may use it in bad faith or in scare quotes.

Exactly. Ppl generally use it incorrectly, but it is still a thing. And yes, especially in jihad/battle-deception and lying is permissible and even encouraged/celebrated. “They tried to deceive Allah, but Allah is the best deceiver” (Quran 3:54)

lol, erdogan keeps repeating this very verse in his meetings, to address his opponents as "deceivers" but he is a bigger deceiver because allah is backing him; as declared in the quran by this verse.
