Your routine reminder that "taqiyya" as a concept is popularized by the Right and is relatively unknown among Muslims.https://twitter.com/SaltyandLit/status/1154025709297373184 …

It’s definitely known among Muslims, but not the way ppl are using it. It’s a permissible lie in order to save your life or stealthily perform jihad. It’s why the 9/11 hijackers drank and went to strip clubs-to fit in/avoid suspicion. Shias use it to avoid being killed by Sunnis.

Yasmine, deceit / deception is permissible in Islam even WITHOUT the Taqiyya clause. Backup from many Hadith sources, and tons by fatwas. Deception and Taqiyya are not mutually exclusive in Islam.

Vast majority of Muslims do not lie. Vast majority of Islamists believe ends justify means, including but not limited to deception. Prevalence is exaggerated, indeed. Taqiyya is NOT a hoax. Unless you disprove Britannica:https://www.britannica.com/topic/taqiyyah

You are right, and I would add that it *is* a hoax in the sense many right-wingers use it, that is to say, as a general permissiveness of deceit in Islam for political control. Everything I've read has only allowed it in a very specific context.

Yes, that’s true. Lying is generally considered wrong, unless the ends justify the means...so deception/lying is allowed as long as it’s for a ‘good’ reason. And, of course, it is always permissible in jihad/times of war as many battle stories illustrate.

That’s why, like a lot of things in Islam, it’s a very subjective grey area. Having said that, most claims of ‘taqiyya’ on the Internet are used incorrectly. Muslims, like all religious ppl, tell partial truths to protect the reputation of their religion-but that’s not taqiyya.
