Really, that hasn't been my experiance. Wonder how dependent that is on backgrounds. I don't know anyone from my community (shia) who was familiar with it, but that was in the states. Worth doing a study on this, ex-Muslims would probably be honest respondents.
I think ‘in the states’ is the key difference. I sincerely doubt Shias from Iran, or other Muslim majority countries, would say the same. I was born and raised here, but I attended Islamic schools-most Muslims in the West (thankfully) are clueless about their religion in general.

I grew up in a Muslim country, in a school run by Jamaat i Islam. I was never taught about "taqiyyah". There are passing mentions of permissibly of hiding one's identity as a Muslim if Muslims are being systemically hunted down. Not relevant in most countries today.
