Your routine reminder that "taqiyya" as a concept is popularized by the Right and is relatively unknown among Muslims.https://twitter.com/SaltyandLit/status/1154025709297373184 …

Really, that hasn't been my experiance. Wonder how dependent that is on backgrounds. I don't know anyone from my community (shia) who was familiar with it, but that was in the states. Worth doing a study on this, ex-Muslims would probably be honest respondents.
-
I think ‘in the states’ is the key difference. I sincerely doubt Shias from Iran, or other Muslim majority countries, would say the same. I was born and raised here, but I attended Islamic schools-most Muslims in the West (thankfully) are clueless about their religion in general.

This is pretty much how I (very much non-Muslim) learned the concept when studying Islam in college. Primarily a Shia concept, isn’t it?
-
You learned it as a way to "stealthily perform jihad"?

I see the whole "drinking at a strip club" thing differently. To me, that's standard martyrdom theology. If someone believes they're about to go straight to heaven no matter what, they get to sin as much as they want beforehand.
-
At undergrad, in our "Rome & the Rise of Christianity" module, I learned that some Christians awaiting martyrdom at the hands of the Romans would have drunken orgies -- for the same reason. Martyrdom wipes away your sins, so why not have some fun first?

I don't think muslims know about it. However, islamists have been practicing double speak for awhile.
-
What are Islamists? Are they not Muslim? The concept of taqiyya is mentioned in the Quran and Hadith and Sira-a lot. Anyone who went to an Islamic school would know of it. Nominal Muslims in the West probably have not as theyre generally ignorant of their religion-thank goodness!

I was just about to say this - especially Shias in avoiding persecution
