It's something people who weren't raised Muslim (or at least religious) often don't get. If you believe this world's basically just a game show, you do whatever it takes to "win" (i.e. get to heaven). For a good person, that may just be (e.g.) charity. For others, violent jihad.
And sometimes even ‘good’ ppl can be so indoctrinated that they’d commit violent jihad. If the highest rewards in heaven, the most good you could possibly be in the eyes of Allah is a jihadi, then that’s what a keen contestant in this game show would strive for.
You’re so right that ppl who didn’t experience it won’t get it-how could they understand that a human could think it was a good thing to murder innocent ppl? I envy them. I wish I couldn’t understand it either.
