Islam and Arab culture are intertwined, but they are distinct. There are 23 Arab countries-we used to all have different cultures before Islam made us look like a monolith. There are Jewish, Christian, pagan, atheist etc Arabs that share cultural aspects minus the religion.
Islamic traditions and Arab culture are not one and the same and they can definitely be divorced. I’m incredibly proud of my Arab heritage and incredibly ashamed of what Islam has brought to this world. Islam/Sharia holds Arabs back from their potential.
I should add that Arab youth (most of the Arab population is under 30) are fighting back and demanding freedom of thought, freedom of religion, democracy etc. They risk social ostracism, imprisonment, and even death to fight for their freedoms.
I hadn't thought about that Yasmine! I've been to Egypt, Turkey and other "muslim countries".. I think you are right. This religion has subjected many cultures. When I've visited though, they all have treated me with kindness, generosity and respect. Seems incongruent I know..
It’s not incongruent. Most Muslims are good ppl-most humans are good ppl. In any society, the ones wreaking havoc are the minority. But this thread is about how those countries used to have rich, diverse, distinct cultures and now they’re just seen as: MUSLIM.
So true. My 93 year old neighbor is an Iraqi Jew. I never get bored listening to her tell stories about her life in Iraq. I hope one day her grandchild will be able to visit.
