I don’t think the doctrine of Islam will ever change. The Quran is memorized by millions of children precisely to ensure that that never happens. But I do think Muslims will overwhelmingly choose to not follow their religion so literally- if given the chance.
Of course if the doctrines exist there is always a chance that some will gravitate towards the literal interpretations...but honestly? It’s a miserable existence. Especially for women. If given freedom of thought/secularism, I think most will choose not to follow literally.
And luckily the overwhelming majority of children memorizing the Quran have no clue what they’re saying 
So, in conclusion, Muslims can choose to practice their religion more loosely without the religion itself ever reforming. The doctrines of Islam in Egypt back then are the exact same ones we have today, it was not ‘reformed’. The religion is constant. It’s the ppl that changed.
