I don't see how Maslow hierarchy can apply here unless one is free to think. The issue is that for a very long time even in so-called "civilized" nations free thinking wasn't allowed. Only when free thought has prevailed in culture can individuals needs be met. And science rise.

Just look up the history of philosophy and of science and you'll see the constant attacks by the state on both. Now I agree Christianity or Christian ideals have been the reason for some of the worst oppression of thought in history. Causing what we now know as "The Dark ages".
