In my personal experience: you’re both right. I have been through debilitatingly traumatic times in my life, but I didn’t get depressed because there was no TIME. I was in survival mode. I’ve only been able to fall into depressions when things in my life were relatively stable.
There’s a line in the book Help where the white girl asks her black servant if she’s happy and the black woman laughs at her and says only white ppl have time/privilege to think about if they’re happy. Essentially that.
