Come on, Yas, you're smarter than this. There are over 20K more tweets, & almost every US politician I support is Xtian. My post is obviously about why electing Muslims to power is a way to keep them accountable. Spin it all you want, but that's what I'm saying here.
I expected you to be smarter than to suggest giving power to ppl we disagree w so that public opinion might sway them. So why not support Trump then? Why not trust that negativity from the public will surely force him to change his ways? Or does it only work for Muslims?
I don't support Omar, Tlaib or Trump, but I find Trump more harmful in the US context because he is part of a right-wing, conservative party. He's liberal, forced to take backward conservative positions, while Omar is a religious conservative forced to take liberal positions. /1
I prefer to see more people go through the latter funnel. I value liberal, free societies, and oppose whatever forces try to derail them. This includes the communism of the past, Islamic fundamentalism, regressive leftism, and right-wing populism today. Not just one thing. /2
I think/hope Ali will clear that up too. I assume he missed that point. We ought not elect bad ideas intentionally in order to try to change them. But once they are in power there are good outcomes possible when they are exposed/pressured (appropriately)
Those last two sentences. ^ This is the point Yas missed. I'm not saying we should elect undeserving Muslims to Congress just because they're Muslims. Didn't think that needed explanation. I'm talking about the silver lining to seeing more Muslims (fairly) elected to power.
What you both should push for is to get Sarah Haider (or another reasonable compassionate atheist) into office, bc there is not one that claims to be an atheist. I would love to hear any of your thoughts on Ohmar. Most of my liberal friends love her and are pro-hijab.
