I grew up in the same town as him. During The Troubles, like him. It shaped us all. We learned very quickly to see our society as lethally divided. I was hyper-vigilant, knowing my religion made me a target. We all grew up thinking, 'violence never solves anything' was a lie.

I was trying to make a similar point a few days ago. My parents were living in Yugoslavia during the Croatian War of Independence. Lots of ethnonationalism filling the streets. The people outraged by his actions/inaction don't know what it feels like to live in conflict.

I want the world to have as few racists as possible. I am also grateful for the fact that people can stop being racist, just as I was able to overcome a fundamentalist upbringing to quit homophobia. We conquer these issues with more dialogue and openness, not less.
