Is it religious or cultural?

Cultural practices and some religions can change but, unfortunately, rigid ideological doctrines like Islam cannot be changed. They can only be rejected, in part or in full.

There is ABSOLUTELY nothing Islamic about this.

Give me a break!!! Tell that to the millions of #muslim girls who are undergoing FGM in Indonesia and Malaysia. Maybe a mild form of #fgm but it is happening nonetheless. For those following the Shafi'i school it is considered obligatory (wājib). #islam #honour

Considered wajib based on what?

It's based on the Sunnah of Muhammed. You can research this yourself. With growing piety amongst Asian #muslims, the practice of #fgm is increasing. The Shafi'i school of Islamic jurisprudence is followed by the majority of #muslims in Somalia, Ethiopia, Yemen and Asia.

It is misinterpretation of Islam. Sunnah is based on hadiths which were written some 300 years after the death of Prophet. I am a follower of very progressive Shi’a sect of Islam and hence my ignorance about such nonsense practices.
