Words in arabic have as many meanings as in any other language. The word you have mentioned means leave them if there is a conflict. Same as any couple, if they fight, they just stop talking to each other until they solve the problem.
Omg what? Do you know any Arabic at all?? It clearly means beat them. It’s not even an obscure word. It is still used in colloquial Arabic every day.

I am of an Arabic origin and I studied Arabic language and got an international baccalaureate with it. We use only one meaning of the word but it has other synonyms. The Quran words are not in our regular, colloquial form of language. It has its own defintions.
