Agreed, it is worth it to try and sort this out. I look back to Areopagitica & Milton's defence of free speech with the advent of the printing press, the argument has been had, this medium is much larger& prolific we shouldn't argue the medium but how we deal with the output
Well, it is about the medium too. In the podcast Renee talks about how the algorithms are set up to recommend more conspiracy theory sites to ppl who are anti-vaxxers, for example. What if those algorithms were set up to recommend opposing views? Challenging vs reinforcing

The algorithms aren't the medium, they're ow the output is manipulated and delivered. It's a bit hard to disentangle the two. This is what I was talking about how we deal with the data.
