This is the last tweet in a long and powerful thread that you should read every word of. So many of us-too many of us-will be able to relate💔 In Islam, even a woman’s voice is awrah (private part). Essentially, women should neither be seen nor heard #FreeFromHijab #NoHijabDayhttps://twitter.com/Omaymam_94/status/1080418186871205888 …

Even the sight of a woman bending over in prayer is too much! What it boils down to is that women are inherently wrong, and the less of them we see and hear, the better. And I can't stand for this bullshit any longer #NoHijabDay

The Jewish equivalent would be: "Kol B'Isha Erva", literally, "The voice of a woman is nakedness". Most Orthodox Jews abide by the interpretation that this means women cannot sing in front of males that are not close relatives. (I didn't abide by this even when I was a believer.)

Geeky question, are the words ervah and awrah cognate words? Possibly not but I'd love to know for certain...any etymologists in the house?

ervah means nudity/nakedness. It comes from biblical hebrew. There are many words that are similar between hebrew and arabic so would make sense that they are cognate.

Yes, I know what both words mean. They are both Semitic languages and the words could be cognate but it is not always so.

I think in this case it is. In judaism cover our hair/head because after we are married it is considered "ervah" .....

I found "In the Shadow of the Sword", by @holland_tom, about the rise of Islam, very illuminating.
