Sitting on a bench on the subway platform during a stifling NYC summer day, I struck up a convo with a woman in hijab next to me. A train passed at full speed creating a breeze. I said something to the effect of how wonderful the breeze felt in my hair. She said,”Must be nice.”
So true. #WhenIWoreHijab I felt like I was wearing a sign on my head that said MUSLIM, that’s all I was. I was not an individual, I was reduced to a caricature.
