The Jewish equivalent would be: "Kol B'Isha Erva", literally, "The voice of a woman is nakedness". Most Orthodox Jews abide by the interpretation that this means women cannot sing in front of males that are not close relatives. (I didn't abide by this even when I was a believer.)

Geeky question, are the words ervah and awrah cognate words? Possibly not but I'd love to know for certain...any etymologists in the house?

As a singer, I often think about this suppression of women’s voices and the music inside them and it makes me raging angry and heartbroken at the same time

I never realized even their singing is suppressed. Often I'd find myself attracted to some female singer without understanding what about her singing attaracted me.

So then in Islam, a woman speaking is considered the equivalent of going down a public road in the middle fo the day with no clothing on of any kind? I mean, I knew the restrictive nature but I honestly wasn't aware a woman's voice is considered a type of pornography.
