I really disagree w this.
There is this pervasive assumption that ppl are bigots or even murderers, so they look for a religion to hide behind, when it’s the opposite that’s true.
The ex @SamHarrisOrg gives is of a JW parent refusing a blood transfusion for their child.

that parent is not a psychopath looking to murder their child, so they are hiding behind the doctrines of JW in order to fulfill their diabolical plan. Most, of course, are regular human beings that were not born w hate, bigotry, or the desire to kill. /2
However they have been indoctrinated into an ideology that has brainwashed then into believing that the hate, bigotry, or even murder is a good thing. Do you really think all those millions of fundamentalists are all essentially psychopaths hiding behind a religion? /3
Thank you for saying this. Sam is absolutely correct. JWs are not shopping around for a faith that will let them martyr themselves or their kids through refusal of blood. Instead, they surrender control of their decision-making through a slow, subtle process of deception.
Years ago I actually rang the JW church. I was so upset bcos they left a mag at my place with stories of kids that had died but gone to heaven due to refusing blood & kids that were now excluded. They came around to see me & we had a big row out the front of my place.
The Elders told me that I was going to hell etc. I quoted the Bible back at them. After they left my very elderly Catholic neighbor came out of her house and said I've been waiting for years for someone to say that". She knew a very sick child that nearly died due to no blood.
