This not entirely true, nobody will execute you for leaving Islam in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other post-soviet countries which have Muslim majority. This is mostly true for Turkey as well.

Because mentioned countries are rooled by secular governments and law, which treat muslims and non-muslims equally. That is why muslims are afraid to kill apostates due to the legal consequenses. I know this because I am an apostate from Tajikistan.

Catholicism was allied with 1930s fascist governments in Spain, Italy, Austria, Poland et al but certainly not with Hitler. Catholic Zentrum party was main defender of democracy alongside Social Democrats during 1st republic.
