As a 1st generation Canadian from an Arab family, Im like a bridge. I see both cultures from my vantage point. I simultaneously feel like I belong in either and neither. Hmar means donkey :) Atheist Arabs see me as soft and privileged as I grew up in the West. And theyre right-I dont feel the cold steel of the blade on my neck like they do. I dont live in fear like they do. I am very lucky. I was able to escape BECAUSE I lived here and not there
Their anger is raw and all-encompassing-even in my most heightened state of anger (over 15 yrs ago now) it was still never quite as all-encompassing because I lived in the West. And there was always hope. Even if it was just a glimmer. So I see your point, my Arab friends.
And for my Canadian friends: This anger has propelled me. It saved my life and my daughter's life-and I won't ever apologize for it. I appreciate it. I honor it. Sorry if it makes you uncomfortable, but as long as there's reason to be, Ill be angry. Maybe it will save more lives.
