I remember when I was around 12, my aunt said fingernails left in the house bring financial hardships. I hid one I cut in the living room and asked if anything changed a few weeks later. That was my way of calling their bullshit back then

Practitioners and followers of the Old Religion won't permit nail clippings or hair from hair-cuts be discarded and potentially picked up by someone else either. Such personal items could be used to form a 'likeness' & a curse or spell placed on an individual. It's nothing new.
