In Islamic communities there is extreme familial and/or social pressure to conform. And in many countries the state-sanctioned punishment for leaving the religion is execution.

Islam =/= Saudi Arabia
It doesn't make it Islamic if some Muslim majority countries have the laws. It is only Islamic if it's proved from the Quran or practices of Muhammad s.a, which it isn't. So don't link it with Islam
Since Malaysia is highlighted there, I just want everyone to know that though Muslims are taught (in school, I know, I disagree as well) that apostasy is punishable by death, it's not practiced irl since the country is governed using civil law and not shariah.
