Important thread on retribution and justice, and why “believe all women” is a dangerous mantra.https://twitter.com/keikoinboston/status/1042913577668096001 …

The fallacy here is that there’s only 2 options when presented with an allegation 1. Believe it to be true instantly. 2. Believe it to be a lie instantly. The reality is serious allegations should be afforded serious investigation and it’s the investigation that determines 1 or 2

Yes, you’re right. But the initial reaction/response has been to not believe women or to assume that they’re lying...this campaign is an effort to correct that so that both the accuser and the accused are presumed innocent.

I think that feminist expressed a horrible sentiment that I totally disagree w, btw. I think that should go without saying. But it should do nothing to deter us from believing all women...until given reason not to. Innocent until proven guilty is a pretty important legal right.

What you describe doesn’t sound like “believing” as much as the logical action of “not disbelieving”. Before I knew anything more about Ford than that she had accused Kavanaugh, I didn’t disbelieve her. But I didn’t just believe her because she’s female. That would be illogical.

If I believe all women but not all men am I not practicing the sexism of lower expectations?
-
I don’t think a presumption of innocence is dependent on sex.

The big letter here, as
@RichardDawkins would say, is capital E, for evidence. Everything hinges on evidence. Everything else is superfluous. Also, to borrow from@stephenfry , let doubt prevail.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

It shouldn't be believe automatically, but take their accusation seriously and perform a thorough investigation based on evidence.

Obviously if there is evidence of wrongdoing, he should not be on the court. Worrying about evidence means you care for the alleged victim. If you didn’t care for her story, one would want Kavanaugh nominated without any evidence.
-
Should say with or without any evidence at the end*
