Yes, religion is at the root cause of this conflict and ppl need to address that. No one wants to acknowledge the elephant in the room-consistently treating it like a purely political conflict will never bring an end to this.

What I think is religion is more of a political tool to asset once dominance more than anything. But thing becomes graver when this political tool is used to change or subsume cultural heritage and identities.
