Happily- as I also talk to my two fully covered Muslim sister in laws who have lived in several countries including the UK. Given that some of the people closest to me are Muslim, I'm lucky to be able to listen in detail to their experiences.

I am sure they tell you how wonderfully liberating it is to be fully covered. Luckily for them they have the choice in the UK. Shame many women do not have that choice, it is the religious diktat or persecution.

Nope - it's way more complicated than that on both counts. To presume anything is to do exactly what Piers Morgan et al did - presume they could understand everybody's very broad and differentiated experiences and choices in a 5 minute debate

It's not complicated. Either you can wear what you like as a woman or you cannot. In the West you can. In Iran/Saudi etc you cannot.

If I may add-girls and women are commonly forced in the West as well. It’s not govt forces, but familial/community forces compelling them. Refusing can lead to dire results-including death. Here are just two examples. There are countless more, of course. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aqsa_Parvez …pic.twitter.com/m43MMzNXm1

The privileged few that are both in the West and actually have a choice (and a voice—again, because they’re in the West) seem to always be the loudest.

I've been saying this for literally years. Instead of western Muslim women using their freedom of voice, movement and education to end their Eastern sisters' subjugation, they use it to enforce their own. They trade women's rights for minority status & moral superiority for self.

Perfectly stated. The minority points gets them further-they’re hailed as heroes from East and West. Whereas if they were to fight, unfortunately, they’d face opposition from the East and West.

If any grown woman is bound by the shackles of religious oppression in western society, chances are she's fought tooth and nail for her right to have them fitted. Meanwhile, those without choice have another padlock secured. Islamic reform can only come through Islamic women.
