The new Neil Armstrong biopic "First Man" omits a key event from Armstrong's moon landing -- the planting of the American flag. The film's star, Ryan Gosling, has defended the decision to leave out the symbolic patriotic moment https://cnn.it/2ooiKvQ pic.twitter.com/uaSSvfyDxV

To be fair, & while I think his comments are nonsense, the actual flag planting took a few minutes. It had not been practiced, and just under the surface regolith, the ground was quite hard, they had trouble getting the pole to stick in. The event happened 45 minutes into the EVA

They took the flag off his suit too.

For all their screaming about ‘historical revisionism’ you’d think they’d have a shred of self-awareness

I grew up in Ottawa. My father worked at NRC. My father and his friends new plenty of Canadians that went to work for NASA on Apollo. Of course they saw the moon landings as a human achievement but it was a human achievement lead by the USA. Leaving out the flag was a mistake.

This “controversy” is stupid. Ryan Gosling isn’t the film maker so he shouldn’t be responsible for defending that decision. The American Flag is not omitted from the film, just the act of planting it. Maybe the movie is bigger than one scene.

How do you know what he would feel, Yasmine? Not everyone in this world is a nationalistic, flag-waving freak. Not everyone gives a shit about this nonsense. This is such a non-issue.
