I think she meant to say ‘why’-and of course I understand that mothers do it so that men will accept to marry their daughters. But it’s a stupid, stupid patriarchal thought process to say ‘I can only stop slicing my daughter’s genitals if men say it’s ok, they’ll still marry her’
But instead of having a conversation, she blocks me. It’s so easy to pretend that men are to blame and to absolve herself and other women of blame. She doesn’t want to face the fact that it’s the women that are the monsters when it comes to #FGM. It’s a difficult fact to face.
I get your point. In a regular western culture women can put her foot down but in Orthodox Islam if only women stands up against FGM, would not they be punished severely? Or divorced? The change has to start from mosque to elders and then to men-women.
Sadly she blocks anyone who criticises Islam. She tells herself FGM is solely cultural, nothing to do with the religion. That's the reason why she blocked me, for daring to suggest that certain schools of Islam do indeed condone FGM.
