The workers are essentially purchased from their home countries -quite often they don’t get paid until the sponsor/employer recoups the cost of the sponsorship and flight. Their passports are withheld so they don’t escape back home.
When you point out the abhorrent human rights abuses to them they say ‘well, they knew the deal and they still chose to come. It’s still better than the way they live in their home countries’. That’s how they justify it.
And it’s true. A lot of the workers come from desolate circumstances so they go to the GCC in search of good wages to support themselves and (most often)send back money to support the rest of their family.
This woman’s sentiments re a day off and withholding the passport are normal/typical/common sentiments. The abuse of workers is also common. They are essentially treated as slaves or, at best, like a second-class ppl (they’re not citizens-citizenship for them is not an option).
