I'm sorry. People are losing their shit over this tweet? Really? (This is why we can't have nice things.)https://twitter.com/RichardDawkins/status/1018933359978909696 …

Listening to the lovely bells of Winchester, one of our great mediaeval cathedrals. So much nicer than the aggressive-sounding “Allahu Akhbar.” Or is that just my cultural upbringing? pic.twitter.com/TpCkq9EGpw

They’re not really losing their shit. They’re just pretending to on Twitter. Have a muazzin start an adhan by calling out ‘Allahu Akbar’ and watch how they all scatter...their words are hollow. They all know exactly how aggressive those words are.

The faux outrage and attempting to make this a big deal is ridiculous, but calling "Allahu Akabar" aggressive in the context of the adhan is wrong, it's a part of the call to prayer just like bells both can sound nice or grating.

It’s not ‘wrong’ to find it grating or nice. It’s his opinion. And I agree w him 100%

Maybe this is a better way to put it. I'm not outraged I find all of that silly. I was just pointing out the wording of his tweet made what I thought was a factually false claim and I pointed it out. Don't care about the rest I'm being nerdy.

It may be false from your perspective. Not from mine or from his. I’ve lived in Islamic countries where the incessant sound of the adhan blared from multiple speakers just a block apart before the sun rose every morning. Aggressive is the kindest adjective he could have used.

BTW, this is what the nerd in me was excited about, I would much rather have a conversation about whether the adhan is inherently aggressive or is it just that it could/is being used aggressively. All the other look at me I'm mad because he said something mean posturing, meh.

Like I said, it’s meant to be aggressive. That is its purpose. If it’s not aggressive, then it’s not serving its purpose correctly-hence the insistence on loudspeakers despite ppl opposing it. It’s meant to cut through other sounds and remind you to go save your soul.

I'm all in favour of banning loudspeakers. In India my family and their friends both Hindu and Muslim complain about mosques and temples using loudspeakers and want them stopped.
