I'm sorry. People are losing their shit over this tweet? Really? (This is why we can't have nice things.)https://twitter.com/RichardDawkins/status/1018933359978909696 …

Listening to the lovely bells of Winchester, one of our great mediaeval cathedrals. So much nicer than the aggressive-sounding “Allahu Akhbar.” Or is that just my cultural upbringing? pic.twitter.com/TpCkq9EGpw

They’re not really losing their shit. They’re just pretending to on Twitter. Have a muazzin start an adhan by calling out ‘Allahu Akbar’ and watch how they all scatter...their words are hollow. They all know exactly how aggressive those words are.

The faux outrage and attempting to make this a big deal is ridiculous, but calling "Allahu Akabar" aggressive in the context of the adhan is wrong, it's a part of the call to prayer just like bells both can sound nice or grating.

It’s not ‘wrong’ to find it grating or nice. It’s his opinion. And I agree w him 100%

I'm not arguing about how he finds or feels about it, I don't care. It was just his wording made it sound like Allahu Akbar was aggressive, in the context of the adhan it isn't. Some random guy yelling it in a busy place cause for alarm, at the start of adhan not so much.

Yes it is. Having it blaring at you five times per day IS aggressive. It’s meant to be aggressive. It’s meant to pull you away from whatever you’re doing to go pray so that you don’t burn for eternity. It’s not meant to sound nice. It’s meant to grab your attention aggressively.

When you arrive in an Islamic country, the sound of the call to prayer is evocative. Then, it starts to bloody get on your nerves. That and the aggressive, ranting sermons - speakers blasted into homes. In the U.K. church bells also get on my nerves, if inconsiderately applied.
