I am grateful and happy to be free. But I’m also still resentful. Watching my girls embrace life in a way I never could heals me, but I’m still sad for the little girl in me that will never get to be a little girl. Let’s have a group session. Tell me your #NoHijabDay story.pic.twitter.com/CKpXplxyhb

Today I am happy that I no longer wear hijab and I will continue to speak up against this damn chastity helmet which is used to police what women do using threat of hellfire and shaming. #NoHijabDay

Here in Norway I read an article about how the negative focus on hijab on young girls is unfair. The author said hijab is not mandated for young girls by Islam, and all we're doing is infantilize parents by taking away their right to dress their children. What's a good response?

The consensus behind hijab is to cover women up so that they don't create desire in men. What do little girls have to cover up??

Nothing I hope. The argument is that it is tradition in some cultures, independent of religion, and we should be open to various cultural expressions.

It exists because religion pushes it in. It is not mandatory to any culture and stems from Muslim Arab customs before it became an example of Muslim Arab supremacy.

I've heard the same, but Muslims say that Islam does not require girls to wear hijab, only those who have passed the age of puberty. That's how they defend little girls wearing hijab. It's a cultural expression, not a religious mandate. Makes it difficult to argue against it.

Which culture exactly? Hijab is worn by women from hundreds of different cultures. They do not share the same culture. They share the same religion.

I don't know! We're discussing an article I read here in Norway, and the author argues that forbidding hijab in elementary school is culturally insensitive to parents who wish to dress their daughters according to their own cultural traditions. I'm looking for counter arguments.

I know 😊 I’m giving you a counter argument: It is unequivocally NOT cultural. It is religious. It’s found in hundreds of very different cultures. Christians from Egypt share the same culture as Muslim Egyptians, but they don’t wear hijab. Same for Jews from Iran etc.

Same religion =/= same culture Catholics from Mexico and the Philippines, for example, share the same religion but have vastly different cultures.
