It’s all about protecting the “oppressed brown skin”. My mom is gay & married & finds it incredibly difficult to criticize Islam. Head in the sand & whataboutery. So unhelpful & frustrating.

He's probably factoring geography into his assessment. Over "there" there're a lot of Muslims, a % of which are a threat. Over "here" there are relatively few compared to how many conservatives there are who are a threat to him & straight people for several reasons.
