Maajid is on point. But the crux here is, according to Islam: Muslimphobia is entirely acceptable; Islamophobia is punishable by death. Actually, I regularly crack a prison joke that Mubarak threw anyone who changed their mind, from anything to anything, in jail.
Perhaps he mistook your joke as a serious claim. Obviously there is sadness and possibly backlash from the dwindling Christian community that yet another has converted to Islam..but the state itself does not punish Christians for converting to Islam. However the opposite is true.
