I realize everyone's twitter feed looks different. But I'll go ahead and subtweet two conversations that I see going by right now: a) How the heck did Shopify get so big this decade and b) You have to work 80 hours a week to be successful. Thread/

Yesterday, passengers travelling with , + endured an awful evening after we lost the ability to run trains on the busiest part of our network, shown in the picture, for over an hour. Here is what happened... 1/

Beware people who offer blanket support at a distance. As soon as that distance decreases, they will feel threatened. They will push back.

What it boils down to is the ability to A/B test possible realities in your head, and then communicate what to do differently now and the difference it makes. n/n

In career progression: "if you could do A, B and C, that would mean you no longer needed to depend on X from the team and could contribute Y to junior team members. That's what it takes to be Senior"

But it's also a really key skill in people development. For example feedback: you need to model the hypothetical where they did the thing differently, diff it against the current world, then communicate the piece of that difference that matters to them

It's obvious enough from a project management perspective. You need enough skills with "What If"s to carve a path through possible realities and adapt to new information

A really key management skill that I don't see people talk about in the abstract: the ability to compare and contrast hypotheticals in detail 1/n

What if we called them supporting lines instead of reporting lines? Imagine replacing lines like “these are my direct reports” with “these are the people I directly support”?

It warms my heart to be reminded that simple acts of allyship matter too. Allyship is advocacy, education, managing change and long-term work, but it's also symbolic acts of visibility and community. I'm proud of our workplace Pride Network for doing both.

So earlier this week my office flew the trans flag half mast, to mark the trans day of remembrance on Nov 20. And afterwards I heard that that a local resident literally came by off the street to tell a colleague how much it meant to them.

Every important computer language today — from Java to C++ — is based on an architecture laid out by computer scientist Barbara Liskov. She spoke with us about the challenges that came with being one of the first women in her field.

See this interview with Hochschild for many clarifying examples and social class perspective nuance. My favorite? “I do think that managing anxiety associated with obligatory chores is emotional labor. I would say that.” - Hochschild

Something a little different today. Trans & Non-Binary folks. What do u want to say to cis people? It can be venting your frustrations, some advice on how to help u all, helpful hints on how to support u better etc... anything u like. I'll block any transphobes, so have it.

I've been playing with the GPT-2 neural net text generators, and they produce interesting results when primed with two disparate themes, e.g. secure C++ coding meets trashy romance novel:

Trans issues are a “legitimate concern” to me as a woman because trans women are women and I am a woman and women’s concerns are relevant to me as a woman, cynical skepticisms about “women’s safety” are a red herring that always preface transmisogyny
