interesting. my guess is it is implementation-dependent and undefined behaviour :) what is your environment? Ubuntu 64-bit?

Yup. I was kindly reminded by some friends that PTEs have only two permission bits - valid and nx. Though see the other reply, planned more.

on X86, if your hardware has memory protection keys support, modern Linux kernels should be able to give you execute-only memory
