The Trump administration is set to end federal funding and support on June 30th for 13 coronavirus testing sites, which are currently located in five states: Illinois, New Jersey, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Context: Pres Trump has said testing is a "double edged sword."
Brett Giroir, Assistant Sec for Health, says the 13 sites are "transitioning to state control & state funding" & that the move is meant to streamline testing & not have "bulky parallel systems." He adds federal support is not being withdrawn but it is coming in a "different way."
As Assistant Sec Giroir defends the change, Scott Becker, CEO of the Association of Public Health Laboratories, says it's not the right time to shift responsibility for the sites.
