And the effect is particularly striking in swing states. Given the number of razor thin margins that decided the 2016 presidential election, the registration gap btw 18-24 year olds and all other age gaps has the potential to make a significant impact.

There are a lot of myths out there, friends. According to data from , had 18-24 year olds been registered at the same rate at 65-74 year olds, they would have cast over 5.2 million more votes in 2016 without even increasing turnout rate.

Without Colvin, support for Parks may not have been mounted The good news is Colvin is still alive. At 80 years old, she is a living of how recently our country not only had laws that denied black Americans basic civil rights, but enforced. Let us

So, you may be asking yourself, why don’t we know about Claudette Colvin? You know the answer. Her age worked against her as did getting pregnant soon after. But Colvin’s action on that bus, without fanfare, was an important influence in the burgeoning civil rights movement.

She and her family stayed up all night in fear of retaliation, her dad ready with his shotgun in case the Ku Klux Klan showed up. She pled not guilty, but the court ruled against her and she was put on probation. Later, she was a plaintiff in the landmark Browder v. Gayle case

For her refusal, police officers handcuffed her and hauled her off the bus. She spent several hours in jail before her mother and pastor arrived and paid her bail. “I was really afraid," of being in jail, "because you just didn't know what white people might do at that time”

Colvin told the she would have given up her seat for an elderly person, but it was a young white woman she was asked to move for. She told the driver, "It's my constitutional right to sit here as much as that lady. I paid my fare, it's my constitutional right."

Colvin was riding a public bus home from school with three of her friends who were also black. They were seated a little more than halfway toward the back of the bus. All the seats on the bus were full, and a white woman ended up standing in the aisle next to them.

Not to diminish the remarkable but how totally predictable that a young person’s earlier accomplishments were overlooked. Before Rosa’s sit, Claudette Colvin, 15, had been arrested for doing exactly the same thing:

Iowa can serve as a model for the rest of the country: When you root students in political discourse and give them the opportunities & access needed to engage, they show up. Iowa had highest turnout of voters 18-24 in a decade during the 2018 midterm elections. Keep it up Iowa!

Sean Hall, a 17 year old Iowan, explained that Gen Z is so serious about voting is because they’re witnessing a broken system crumble in real time. “We see a future in which opportunity is increasingly scarce,” he said. “These are the dreams of the people at stake.”

It is so refreshing when legislators GET it as deeply as Assembly Member Victor Pichardo. We went to Albany on Monday to rally support for the agenda, and Assembly Member said it (almost) as well as we can:
