Often those metaphors grew out of the latest science and technology, as with the Watchmaker. For a few recent decades our metaphors involved computers and genetics. Now, as you say, they’re streaming serial drama.

Great point. For me it's also this sense that *every* experience is mediated or curated in some way, which speaks to both more of this type of thing occurring (social media, targeted ads) and our growing awareness of existing forms (anthropocene).
