This 1957 D.D.I. (Tech) memo from the UK national archives suggests the RAF were having some serious problems with their radars around that time?? Historian David Clarke references this document below:

Aug. 1949, Clyde Tombaugh witnessed an aerial phenomena he could not explain. He publicly advocated that the countless unexplained observations like his own warrant large-scale scientific investigation. Dr. Michael Swords’ on Clyde Tombaugh’s experience:

The staggering thing is that there were 890 pages of documents released at the time, but there's only a common 60 or so disseminated. Ive peiced together all 800+ now with Jan, etc. Some of the new stuff is here from Part 1 through to Part 9:

4 "Air Force and Defense Department records variously describe the objects as helicopters, aircraft, unknown entities and brightly lighted, fast-moving vehicles that hovered over nuclear weapons storage areas and evaded all pursuit efforts." Source:

It was Sydney researcher Anthony Clarke who found the item in the Australian ABC TV archives; paid to have a copy made, and posted it to YouTube. For a large archive of McDonald Australian material please see

Dr. James McDonald’s presentation at the 1969 Symposium (2nd post) reviews what was known on this case, and accurately details the USAF’s irresponsible handling of this issue, along with the Condon report: Another one:

As explained by () Dr. Fred Whipple, a top RADAR expert in the United States, had reviewed the case at astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek’s request, and had some advice for the USAF’s Project Blue Book:

Thayer’s evaluation written in the Condon report and his AIAA report did not differ much. You can read his AIAA review here:

The best case from this unexplained sample is the 1956 Lakenheath, UK, radar-visual tracking and jet pursuit of UFOs. This case was investigated by physicist/radar expert Dr. Gordon Thayer, who was a member of Condon’s staff, and then wrote a report for the AIAA review panel.

A third of the reports in the Condon study were “unidentified.” Some of the other 2/3 of reports were trash that no one in their right mind would bother with, yet Condon actively sought them and put them in this tiny sampling, which is a scientific scandal in and of itself.

Jan. 1967, at the beginning of this project, Robert Low and Dr. Condon wanted recommendations from USAF the contractors as to how to proceed. After a meeting with AF officers on the Boulder campus, Condon/Low received this constructive letter:

More importantly, the AIAA panel "did not find a basis in the report for his prediction that nothing of scientific value will come of further studies [of UFOs].” Here’s a review by Stanford astrophysicist Dr. Peter Sturrock:

A 1970-71 UFO Subcommittee of scientists reviewing the report noted that: “Condon's chapter, 'Summary of the Study,' contains more than its title indicates; it discloses many of his personal conclusions.”
