I could go on about how undercharging for your labor only serves to convince the customer base that your years of experience and the time and effort required is only worth so much. This harms the entire community.

If you're worried about losing customers, don't. The money you can make from charging what your labor is worth more than makes up for any decrease in commissions may entail.

If you're just starting out, you should still not be charging less than what you'd be making at a minimum wage job.

If you know any artists who are charging way too little for their work or you are that artist and need help figuring out a better pricing model, let me know. I'll do my best to help. Artists deserve solidarity for their labor.

If you commission art, expect to pay for the artist's time. Don't let them low-ball themselves. Don't expect handouts. Also: Exposure is not payment. It is part of the job. Stop pretending you're doing anyone a favor by making them work for free.

I haven't been able to bring myself to charge money for my art yet, so I only give it away as personal favors. That's one way to solve it I guess. I don't want to make a job out of it anyway, since that would suck all the fun out of it.
