Great success. One question: where is the light coming to the ‘dark side‘? The terrain picture is very bright.

There is no “dark side” of the moon, only a side that never faces Earth. Here is a photo I took of the Moon through my telescope. If you imagine the Moon as a 3D sphere, you’ll see that the side that never faces us has sunlight on it too.pic.twitter.com/6TRqOE0ULl

Here’s another picture I took - imagine the sun is off to the right relative to the moon so the right side of the moon on side we never see is half in sunlight toopic.twitter.com/0ODKZRpuXO

Question: Are The moon's phases similar to the earths' in a way that the pole will have periods of sunlight lasting longer than 15 or so days?

1 of 2 : In short, Earth 24 hour sun at the polar regions is due to our +/- 23 degree axial tilt which gives us seasons. The northern summer starts 21st June pointing the north pole in direct sunlight for 6 months (thus the south pole is in 24 hour darkness for 6 months)

2 of 2: The moon only has a 1.5 degree tilt so doesn’t have “seasons”, however, certain craters (i.e. Shackleton Crater) cast shadows that mean parts of the crater never receives sunlight

The Shackleton Crater is ideal for a moon base. The rim is in permanent sunlight for power generation, temperatures are relatively stable at the crater and the nearby 5km tall Malapert mountain would act as a great radio relay
