At one time, I tried to enlist in the military. Wouldn't you know it, they turned me away for having been on the stuff long ago, even though it's been 10+ years.
I suggest to any parent: If a doctor tries to prescribe Ritalin or any other kind of Behavior Control Drug... TURN THEM DOWN!!!

ADDENDUM: I'm not sure if it's related, but I've also had some problems with my memory since taking it back then. I don't know if that's a side effect or not.

It depends on if you had an under-active prefrontal cortex. Were there other side effects when you were taking it and how long were you taking it? Do you suffer from any emotional problems in addition to memory loss?

I'm not sure about the first bit, and as for other side effects I think that's about it. My parents gave it to me for about a year or so before they realized it wasn't really helping me. And emotions, well sometimes I find it difficult to show emotion, like happiness.

4) I find that some parents simply don’t know how to handle their children. Easier to blame behavior on ADHD then to manage bad behavior. And they leave the schools to handle the bad behavior. Many parents are in denial and have no idea how badly their kids behave at school.

I’ve seen teachers ostracize&embarrass kids to control them.They allow other students to feel empowered by asking them to report anything a kid does,further alienating them.They do not employ discipline or consistency,& then are amazed the kid is confused. Adults should do better

My heart goes out to you, very difficult situation. Our son ( now 20 ) was on Ritalin from age 8 to 17. I’m not sure if he would be alive today without it but it is definitely a double edged sword. I believe there are better drugs on the market today. Wish you well, God Bless you

It’s a tough call. Not treating ADHD in SOME way, many times results in low self esteem and depression from not being able to cope in a busy setting, being disciplined constantly, and feeling “weird” or like a failure.

Depends on the kid. For every one of you there are also kids who can’t learn and are barely functional. In the past those kids failed school and ended up in prison when they couldn’t cope on their own. No, that isn’t normal make behavior. Yes, it’s ok to help boys who struggle.

As a person who has paid the price for us treating maladaptive behavior in men as normal and good, fuck you. You can pay the bills when these men grow up and their behavioral problems manifest in violence against the people clients to them, which are usually women and children.

When I asked my pediatriciany 19 years ago about my son having ADHD after a teacher pegged him & most boys in the class..she asked if I thought he had it. I said no..boys are physical and can't sit still. She concurred. They over dx boys with it. Boys will be boys.
