@anacondainc position in this issue is shameful, but RStudio isn't the R community and Anaconda isn't the Python community. Never has been R vs Python.

I certainly agree that Rstudio isn't the R community and conda isn't the Python community. But I do think I'm tapping into something given the replies to this post:https://twitter.com/gdequeiroz/status/1117968309851279360 …

I think Jupyter is doing more creative and community-driven work to make computing accessible to the masses than basically anyone, and I'll continue to teach with it. But I also really do feel that the swift response by a lot of prominent R users & developers is inspiring.

You are! I really enjoyed the articles you posted to the Carpentries slack about RStudio on Digital Ocean. I teach in the cloud a lot, too, to meet my students tech needs (https://paleantology.com/2018/09/05/plan-c/ …). Glad you're on team Carpentries!

Thanks a lot!! The #1 skill is to distinguish heroes and villains, and it's really nice to read that you know the difference and that you are in the academia. I teach too, and I always tell my students that respect and collaboration are more valuable than code :)

And here is a post that explains how to install R in Ubuntu, Mac and Windows. It includes videos. https://blog.pacha.hk/2019/04/07/how-to-install-r-on-mac-ubuntu-and-windows/ …

And I also have to say that the R community (I love
@rOpenSci so much!!) has shown a respect to each other that I really value. That's the thing that drives my motivation to write tutorials and packages. -
I had a similarly awesome experience with
@ropensci. Highly recommend!https://ropensci.org/blog/2018/12/11/treestartr/ … -
I love
@rOpenSci so much! Here's my 1st contributionhttp://github.com/ropensci/tradestatistics … -
There's a pyopensci getting started. I hope they embody the same community spirit: http://www.pyopensci.org/ I think more of this type of thing where you can get help at the novice --> intermediate junction will make the community more equitable, so I'm jazzed to see this!

Wow. Feel sorry for your students. R is a pain-in-the-ass compared to Python. It's like sentencing them to unending purgatory.
-
Having taught and developed in both, I disagree. And given that R is more common in evolution, ecology and behavior literature, I needed justifications to teach in Python. Python is my first love, but R has eaten its lunch in a lot important ways for the learners I serve.
