#WIADchat Re: Q3: How do you use models, how do you break out of those models? - Indi Young's Mental Models always comes back to mind. Forever useful, bedrock UX stuff! But if a model starts to look suspiciously too much like users' current, ingrained, work-around thinking...
...must identify specific points in the MM diagram where it's "safe" and sensible to break from users' MM for their own future sake. Helps to detail these break-the-mold points w/ 1. Clear value to user, 2. Instant way to explain that, 3. How user can learn it quickly. #WIADchat
This often has different applications too. In some domains, it might be better to stick close to users' mental model. But in others (e.g., highly complex domains where things work a certain way) I want to update user mental models so they understand how a thing works.
