just out of interest, what do you think the chickens we eat eat? Thin air? Or perhaps crops that could have been farmed for people? Also, energy is always lost through its conversion to a different form (i.e. animal fat/muscle), so animal products will waste more energy/calories

Generally true, but animals can eat lower quality feed than humans, so it's not necessarily wasteful or less efficient in all cases
